📣 RELATIVES, we need your support to take action today!!! 📣 We have NOW until October 21 at 11:59 PM MST to submit a Public Comment to Protect Pactola. ✊🏽
In March of 2023 the US Forest Service, in coordination with the Bureau of Land Management, proposed a ‘Mineral Withdrawal’ that would cover over 20,000 acres of public land surrounding the Pactola Reservoir near Rapid City, SD. If the ‘Mineral Withdrawal’ is approved, the withdrawal would remove all future rights for mining, drilling, and exploration in the proposed area for UP TO 20 YEARS!!
The ‘Mineral Withdrawal’ will preserve and protect Pactola. 🌊⛰️
Did you know that the Pactola Reservoir is the main source of drinking water for Rapid City, SD, Ellsworth Air Force Base, and THOUSANDS of people downstream?
Currently, there are already 293,000 acres of land under some phase of a claim by mining companies in the Black Hills, just under 20% of the entire area, with 121,000 of those acres being added since April of 2022!
In addition, the Black Hills are ILLEGALLY occupied Oceti Sakowin Treaty Territory. In its opinion on the theft of the Black Hills, the U.S. Supreme Court stated that, "A more ripe and rank case of dishonest dealings will never, in all probability, be found in our history" (United States vs. Sioux Nation of Indians, 448 U.S. 371, 388 (1980)).
This ‘Mineral Withdrawal’ is a CRUCIAL STEP in preserving the land for future generations while fighting for the lands to be returned to the rightful stewardship of our Indigenous Peoples. But to do that we need your help to ensure that happens! ✊🏽
🫵🏽 We need YOU to Submit a Comment to the U.S. Forest Service SUPPORTING the ‘Mineral Withdrawal’ proposal ASAP! Anyone can submit, regardless of geographical location, as long as you provide:
1.) Name
2.) Stating you SUPPORT the withdrawal
3.) Explain why you support the withdrawal
WE can no longer let these mining companies contaminate our water supply and put the community’s health at risk! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, choose to drink clean water. Your thoughts and opinions matter.
