In this time of resistance amid political repression, we sat down with Nick Tilsen to talk about the challenges we are up against and why movements are crucial now more than ever.
“Don't let the colonizers tag you with a label. What I mean by this is we look all throughout history of how the government has treated Indigenous people. At one time we were called “savages,” and then we were called “hostiles,” and then “militants.”
Now we're being called “terrorists.” It’s old news for colonizers and the governments made up of them to stick labels on our people. To make us seem less human, to make it seem like we're a threat. To make us seem like we're less than. Because if colonizers can tag us with those labels, then they can use the full force of their agencies, of their courts, of their systems to try to dehumanize, villainize, and criminalize us, to try to kill us, to try to destroy us.
We have to build power through stronger relationships so that we can look out for one another and build collective resilience that leads to stronger movements of change that can upend what's happening in the world, and to do it with empathy and love and beautiful resistance.”

I have screened many former uranium miners and downwinders working for the Radiation Exposure and Screening Program at UNM. We are still screening our pre-71s but without hope of compensation. My hope is that once this passes my clinic will be overwhelmed with patients! I"m grateful to all of my friends who have repeatedly gone to Washington to fight for this bill.
Anyone with a qualifying diagnosis (positive B read or various cancers) can contact the Department of Labor to see about qualifying for benefits that way. It is not limited to date of employment (post 71s can potentially qualify). It's worth a call! Here is the number:
Sorry, this is totally out of order.
