MASE Coordinator Contract

Multicultural Alliance for a Safe Environment Background:

MASE is rooted in the experiences of uranium-impacted communities of the southwestern United States. We are communities working to restore and protect the natural and cultural environment through respectfully promoting intercultural engagement among communities and institutions for the benefit of all life and future generations.

The position is located in New Mexico

Coordinator Scope of Work

Contract: $60,000.00 per year

Work week may include odd hours, and occasionally extend into the weekend

No Benefits

Reimbursement for out of pocket MASE expenses with supporting documentation

General Purpose:

The Coordinator is responsible for the overall administration and management of the MASE network, including programs, fundraising, and organizational operations. Areas of responsibility include planning and evaluation, policy development and administration, and public relations. The Coordinator is directly accountable to MASE Core Group Committees.

General Breakdown of Responsibilities:

A.   Fiscal (20%)

  • Develop, recommend, and monitor annual budgets. 
  • Provide for proper fiscal record keeping and reporting with MASE Fiscal Agent
  • Prepare and submit grant applications and funding proposals. 
  • Prepare and submit grant reports.
  • Ensure compliance with funding source requirements and pertinent regulations.
  • Pursue supplemental funding sources (i.e. major donors, events and merchandise)

B.   Administration (10%)

  • Develop and administer operational policies. 
  • Submit monthly work reports and updates on MASE/core group programs and activities
  • Keep copies of all meeting notes and fiscal reports. 

C.   Program Management (50%)

  • Schedule and facilitate MASE monthly meetings/Zoom calls virtually or in person to share programmatic work.
  • Plan and coordinate MASE retreats (facility contracts, housing, food, travel, etc)
  • Assist with network development on an annual basis.
  • Oversee all programs, services and activities to ensure that program objectives are met.  
  • Initiate and assist in developing policy recommendations and in setting priorities.
  • Facilitate MASE organizational goals & objectives consistent with the MASE mission and strategic plan
  • Provide information needed for evaluation of the organization’s activities. 
  • Provide support for each MASE Core Group as needed. Assist with the development of core group objectives, provide support for core group events and activities. 
  • Facilitate MASE communication with federal and state legislative representatives, and regulators.

D.   Public Relations (20%)

  • Develop relationships and regular communications with key allies working on environmental justice, uranium issues, environmental issues in NM, and national issues that impact our priorities. (sacred sites, Environmental Justice, Radiation Exposure Compensation Act, uranium mining & processing activities, related health & environmental impacts, nuclear fuel chain, radioactive waste disposal).
  • Serve as chief liaison with other community groups upon request. (Joining Zoom calls, sharing MASE work, reporting back on other work)
  • Act as a spokesperson for MASE in press releases and social media, in public meetings and legislative committee meetings. 
  • Maintain website and Facebook pages.

Contractor Qualifications:

  • Must understand concepts of Environmental Justice & Social Justice, including Environmental Justice Principles.
  • Must have previous community-organizing experience (special events, community gatherings, etc.)
  • Must have proven fundraising experience (grant writing, budget preparation, grant management)
  • Must possess a comfortable knowledge of local Indigenous culture & customs, in particular Navajo & Pueblo. 
  • Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and carry out objectives without supervision.
  • Dispute resolution experience and capabilities preferred. 
  • Must possess planning and leadership skills.  
  • Ability to implement projects from early planning stages into reality. 
  • Must be a team player – ability to work collaboratively with others. 
  • Flexible work schedule, often around odd hours (evening meetings and/or community gatherings).
  • Good communication skills – verbal & written. 

Credentials and Experience:

    * Two years similar experience coordinating multiple activities and networks

    * Equivalent combination of education and experience.
